African Caribbean Autism Family Support Group

The African Caribbean Autism Family Support Group is a community based organization dedicated to providing support, resources, and advocacy for families affected by autism.

We believe in creating a safe and inclusive environment where individuals with autism can thrive and reach their full potential.

Our mission is to provide a safe space for sharing experiences and finding necessary support in the journey of understanding and acceptance

My Acafsg's Story

My name is Taiwo Oluwatuyi, and in 2018, I founded the African Caribbean Autism Family Support Group (ACAFSG). At that time, I found myself facing the daunting task of caring for my autistic daughter and my two other kids without any support network in my area. There were no African support groups where I could connect with others who shared similar experiences, leaving me feeling isolated and overwhelmed.

As a trained fashion designer, I spent my spare time making African attire for women. Through this, I met six other women who, like me, were caring for special needs children. Recognizing the opportunity to support each other, I reached out to them, and together, we decided to start our own support group.

Four years later, my sister’s friend, Dr. Dianne Regisford, helped connect me with Mrs. Jacqui Gitau, leader of AFiUK, who assisted me in establishing my group. Dr Dianne Regisford also connected me with a company called Makespace Oxford, which offered me a safe and comfortable venue for ACAFSG activities on a weekly basis. Additionally, I rented one of their spaces for my clothing business, this enabling me to support acafsg group members and their families while pursuing my entrepreneurial endeavors.

ACAFSG is more than just a support group; it’s a lifeline for families within the African and Caribbean diaspora impacted by autism. Our mission is to provide support, resources, and empowerment to families facing similar challenges. We aim to create a safe space where parents, educators, and others can connect, share experiences, and find solace.

Through ACAFSG, I’ve had the privilege of extending a helping hand to other women facing similar challenges, fostering a sense of community and understanding. Our group has become a beacon of hope for many families, providing much-needed support and encouragement.

If you or someone you know could benefit from our support, please reach out to us. Together, we can build a stronger, more compassionate world for all families impacted by autism.
